Description

El Mexicano Añejo Tequila – 40% ABV | 750ml

Rich, elegant, and deeply rooted in traditional tequila craftsmanship, El Mexicano Añejo Tequila is a premium Highlands tequila crafted to showcase the harmony between mature agave character and refined oak aging. Bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml format, this añejo delivers layered notes of orange marmalade, cooked agave, cocoa, vanilla, and baking spice with a smooth, structured finish designed for sipping.

Process & Profile

Produced by the Bañuelos family at NOM 1588 in Arandas, Jalisco, El Mexicano Añejo is crafted from fully mature 100% Blue Weber agaves harvested after more than six years of growth in the Highlands region. The agaves are slow cooked in low-pressure stainless steel autoclaves for 18–24 hours before undergoing a five-step roller milling process and extended open-air fermentation lasting more than seven days.

The tequila is double distilled in custom stainless steel pot stills designed by master tequilero León Bañuelos Ramírez to enhance aromatic complexity and preserve agave character. It is then aged for approximately 30 months in a combination of new American oak and French oak barrels, creating a balance of vanilla richness, citrus brightness, spice, and oak depth.

Appearance

Golden amber with bright copper and straw-colored highlights, reflecting its extended maturation in French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Orchard fruit, cedar, orange marmalade, citrus peel, chamomile, cooked agave, vanilla, maple, toasted coconut, and cocoa.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied with flavors of orange marmalade, roasted pineapple, sweet cooked agave, mineral richness, cocoa nibs, maple, coffee, and baking spice.

Finish: Long, warming, and layered with lingering oak spice, cacao, citrus oils, and smooth agave sweetness.

What Makes It Special

El Mexicano Añejo stands out for combining traditional tequila production with unusually long aging while preserving an agave-forward profile. The use of both French and American oak barrels creates a distinctive balance between citrus-driven elegance and richer vanilla, maple, and cocoa notes.

Among tequila enthusiasts on Reddit, the añejo has developed a reputation as an underrated sipping tequila praised for its balance of honey, vanilla, cooked agave, bourbon-like richness, black pepper, and long finish. Community discussions also frequently highlight the Bañuelos family’s historic connection to the original classic era of Cazadores tequila production.

How to Enjoy

Best enjoyed neat in a sipping glass to appreciate its layered citrus, spice, and oak complexity. It also pairs exceptionally well with dark chocolate, cigars, grilled meats, and rich desserts featuring cacao or caramel. A few drops of water can help open additional citrus and herbal aromatics.
