Description

Calle 23 Tequila Criollo El Dos Reposado – 93.4 Proof (46.7% ABV) | 750ml

Calle 23 Criollo El Dos Reposado is a highly limited tequila created by Calle 23 founder and Maestra Tequilera Sophie Decobecq as a tribute to her second son, Eliès. Made from the rare Criollo variant of Blue Weber Agave grown in the Highlands of Jalisco, this extraordinary expression represents more than eight years of experimentation, maturation, and blending. Only 3,932 bottles were produced worldwide.

Although labeled Reposado, Criollo El Dos contains a carefully developed blend of different maturation stages: 8% Reposado, 77% Añejo, and 15% Extra Añejo. The result is a deeply layered tequila that combines the distinctive cooked-agave character of Criollo with mature oak, dried fruit, spice, herbs, and an exceptionally long finish.

Process & Production

Criollo El Dos begins with the rare Criollo variant of Blue Weber Agave from the Highlands of Jalisco. The agave is processed at NOM 1545 using low-pressure autoclaves and roller-mill extraction, followed by open-air fermentation in stainless-steel tanks and distillation in stainless-steel pot stills with copper coils.

The story of El Dos began on the day Sophie Decobecq's second son, Eliès, was born. A new production of Calle 23 Criollo Blanco was placed into well-seasoned ex-whiskey barrels. After approximately nine months, portions were removed from the barrels and preserved while other portions continued aging. Over subsequent years, parts of the tequila developed into Añejo and eventually Extra Añejo components.

Years of tasting, experimentation, and blending trials ultimately produced the final composition of 8% Reposado, 77% Añejo, and 15% Extra Añejo. Because tequila regulations require a blend to carry the designation of its youngest component, the final expression is labeled Reposado despite the majority of the liquid having been matured considerably longer.

Appearance

Bright honey-gold with a polished, luminous appearance. The tequila shows noticeable viscosity in the glass, reflecting the depth of its extended maturation and high-proof bottling.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Cooked pineapple, mango, guava, almonds, cardamom, and fresh herbs emerge alongside refined oak. With time in the glass, additional layers of fruit and spice become more apparent.

Palate: Rich and full-bodied, with notes of peanuts, orange peel, cherries, cooked agave, herbs, and spice. The mature components contribute depth and oak while the Criollo agave remains an important part of the profile.

Finish: Exceptionally long and harmonious, with lingering herbal character, oak, spice, and a subtle pine-resin quality.

What Makes It Special

Calle 23 Criollo El Dos is built around one of tequila's rarer agave expressions: Criollo Blue Weber. Unlike conventional cultivated Blue Weber, Criollo plants are uncommon and are associated with concentrated sugars and an intensely aromatic character.

Its maturation is equally distinctive. Rather than being a conventional Reposado aged for a single period, El Dos is the result of an eight-year journey that ultimately combines Reposado, Añejo, and Extra Añejo tequila. The final blend is predominantly Añejo, with Extra Añejo providing additional depth and Reposado maintaining the youngest component required for the Reposado designation.

Only 3,932 bottles were produced, making Criollo El Dos an exceptionally limited Calle 23 release.

How to Enjoy

Calle 23 Criollo El Dos is best enjoyed slowly and thoughtfully, allowing the tequila time to open in the glass.

Recommended Serves:

  • Neat in a tequila tasting glass
  • At room temperature
  • With a small amount of water to explore additional aromas
  • As an after-dinner sipping tequila

Because of its 46.7% ABV and layered maturation, allowing the tequila to rest in the glass before tasting can reveal additional fruit, herbal, spice, and oak characteristics.

Brand Story

Calle 23 was founded by Sophie Decobecq, whose scientific background and long-term work with agave have shaped the brand's experimental approach to tequila. Criollo El Dos continues the story of the original Calle 23 Criollo Blanco while taking the rare agave in a completely different direction through extended maturation and blending.

The expression is particularly personal to Decobecq. On the day her second son, Eliès, was born, she began the process that would eventually become Criollo El Dos. More than eight years later, the resulting tequila was released as a limited edition of just 3,932 bottles.
