Description

Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Mole Cask Finished Añejo Tequila – 80 Proof (40% ABV) | 750ml

Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Mole Cask Finished Añejo Tequila is a limited expression that brings together traditional 100% Blue Agave tequila with one of Mexico's most distinctive culinary traditions: mole. This Añejo begins with Reserva de la Familia's traditional tequila-making process before receiving a three-month finish in new American oak casks seasoned with Oaxacan red mole.

The mole-cask finish adds layers of cacao, dried fruit, roasted spice, pepper, and gentle oak to the naturally rich cooked-agave character of the tequila. Bottled at 40% ABV, this expression offers a distinctive combination of agave sweetness, dark chocolate-like notes, warm spices, and oak.

Process & Production

Reserva de la Familia begins with carefully selected 100% Blue Weber Agave. The agave is slowly steam-roasted in traditional masonry brick ovens for approximately 40–42 hours, allowing the starches to convert into fermentable sugars while developing the rich cooked-agave character associated with the Reserva de la Familia profile.

After cooking, the agave is processed through a four-step roller mill. The extracted agave juice is fermented in closed stainless-steel tanks for approximately 55–60 hours using the Cuervo family's proprietary yeast before being distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills.

For this special Mole Cask expression, the Añejo tequila receives an additional three-month finish in new American oak casks seasoned with Oaxacan red mole. This finishing step brings the tequila into contact with the flavors and aromas of mole, adding cacao, dried fruit, pepper, roasted spice, and oak to the underlying cooked-agave spirit.

Appearance

Rich golden amber with warm copper tones, reflecting the tequila's oak maturation and additional mole-cask finishing.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Cooked agave opens into aromas of cacao, dried fruit, roasted nuts, cinnamon, dried chile, and soft oak.

Palate: Rich cooked agave combines with dark chocolate and cacao, dried fruit, pepper, cinnamon, warm baking spices, and gentle oak. The mole influence adds depth while allowing the tequila's agave character to remain present.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering cacao, dried chile, roasted spice, sweet agave, and soft oak.

What Makes It Special

The defining feature of this Reserva de la Familia release is its mole-seasoned cask finish. Rather than simply aging tequila in conventional oak, the 2026 Private Cask Collection Edition No. 2 uses new American oak casks seasoned with Oaxacan red mole for approximately three months.

This creates a bridge between two important Mexican traditions—tequila and mole—bringing savory, spicy, fruity, and cacao-driven elements into an aged 100% Blue Agave tequila.

It is part of Reserva de la Familia's broader approach to combining traditional tequila production with carefully selected casks and finishing techniques.

How to Enjoy

  • Neat in a tequila tasting glass

  • Slightly chilled

  • Over a large ice cube

  • With a small splash of water

  • Alongside Mexican cuisine

  • Paired with mole dishes, roasted meats, or dark chocolate

  • In a tequila Old Fashioned

For the fullest expression of the mole-cask influence, sipping it neat allows the cacao, spice, dried fruit, and cooked-agave notes to develop gradually in the glass.
