Description

Plantation Rum Guyana 1998 Ocho Tequila Cask Maturation 750ml

Exotic, experimental, and deeply complex, Plantation Guyana 1998 Ocho Tequila Cask Maturation is a rare single cask release that bridges the worlds of aged Demerara rum and ultra-premium tequila. Distilled in 1998 and bottled at 44.8% ABV in a 700ml format, this limited-edition expression showcases the unmistakable character of Guyana’s legendary Port Mourant double wooden pot still enhanced through an innovative Ocho Tequila cask finish.

Process & Profile

Distilled in Guyana from molasses on the historic Port Mourant double wooden pot still, this rum underwent 17 years of tropical aging in ex-bourbon barrels before traveling to France for an additional 2 years of continental aging in Ferrand casks. It was then finished for approximately 6–12 months in Ocho Tequila casks, adding a striking layer of agave-driven complexity and savory brightness.

This release is part of Plantation’s acclaimed Single Cask Collection, known for experimental finishes and limited-production bottlings that explore unusual cask interactions while preserving the identity of the base spirit.

Appearance

Deep amber with rich copper highlights, showing extended maturation and dense concentration.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Intensely aromatic with cooked agave, lime peel, black pepper, toasted almond, vanilla, pecan, mango, dates, and nougat.

Palate: Full-bodied and oily with layers of cocoa, oak spice, olives, cloves, raisins, toffee, balsamic notes, and subtle salinity.

Finish: Exceptionally long with lingering molasses, tobacco, licorice, and earthy agave character.

What Makes It Special

This release stands out for its highly unusual maturation program, pairing historic Guyanese rum distillate with casks from Tequila Ocho—one of the most respected terroir-driven tequila producers in the world. The tequila cask finish introduces vibrant agave, citrus, and pepper nuances that complement the dark, oily depth of Port Mourant rum in unexpectedly harmonious ways.

Rum enthusiasts on Reddit frequently describe the bottle as a fascinating crossover experiment between premium rum and agave spirits, with many praising the synergy between the two categories.

How to Enjoy

Best enjoyed neat in a proper tasting glass to fully appreciate its evolving layers of tropical fruit, spice, and agave influence. A few drops of water can further open the rum’s herbal and mineral dimensions. Given its rarity and complexity, it is best suited for contemplative sipping rather than cocktails.
