Scorpion Mezcal Anejo Arroqueno Aged 7 Years 750ml
Up in the mountains of Oaxaca, Douglas French, Master Distiller of Scorpion Mezcal, has been developing aninnovative program of new expressions of anejo mezcals. This is an alchemistic project that started in 1995. The purpose was to explore and revive the ancient practice of ageing mezcal that was initiated by the Spanish. When the Spanish discovered Mexico they brought oak casks on their ships and when their brandy in the barrels ran out, they started to store their new favorite spirit, Mexican Mezcal, in their barrels. This practice went on until approximately the 1940’s when modern society perfected food grade stainless steel and plastic recipients to store spirits.
Doug traveled to the wine making regions of France and was able to select with the wine makers in Bordeau and Burgonea the finest special French Oak barrels to import into Oaxaca, Mexico, for his aging project. He started to store barrels of mezcal at the distillery and in his personal cellar on his maguey plantation with Mezcal made from Espadine and several wild agaves.
The project required growing agave which can take anywhere from 6 to 15 years to grow to maturity in a plantation. Once the agave is harvested it takes several months to process and distill the small batch spirits. Then the aging in the barrel can begin and has been going on for about 20 years now and can go on indefinitely. These special barrels bring forward distinct characteristics in the mezcal, over long periods of time it rounds out the flavors, and reaches the perfect balance between wild and refined, giving each expression of the Cask Strength mezcal a unique nose, palate and finish.
We are ecstatic to present our Barrel Pick. It took more than a year, a lot of meetings and reviewer sessions to pick the right barrels to start our first of what we hope will be many barrel picks to come. This first time we present our Scorpion Mezcal Anejo 7 Year Old Espadin and Scorpion Mezcal Anejo 7 Year Old Arroqueno Mezcal.
In our seven years old Extra añejo Mezcal Arroqueño, you will find the “terroir” of Mexican soil in the nose, you can almost feel spice and dry chili, that combined with heavy char barrels fusions in the mouth to notes that can take you to a little village traditional cuisine.
On the other hand our 7 years old Extra Añejo Mezcal Espadin, is sweet in nose, flavors of nuts, orange peel and autumn leaves harmonize remarkably in the palate, the oak spices and enhances the flavors to yield an intense finish where you will feel the complexity and richness of thisunique Extra Añejo Mezcal.
