Description

Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas 2023 – 106 Proof (53% ABV) | 750ml

Powerful, highly concentrated, and exceptionally agave-forward, Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas 2023 is the second release of Ocho’s special high-proof Puntas expression. Produced from agave harvested at Rancho Mesa Colorada in the Highlands of Jalisco, this limited release is bottled at 53% ABV (106 proof) in a 750ml bottle. Rather than using only the conventional heart of the distillation, Puntas captures a particularly narrow and prized portion of the distillate, resulting in an intense expression of Blue Weber agave.

Process & Production

Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas 2023 is produced from 100% Blue Weber agave harvested from the single estate Rancho Mesa Colorada in Los Altos, Jalisco. The agave is cooked in traditional stone and brick ovens, extracted with a roller mill, fermented in wooden tanks, and double distilled in copper pot stills.

What distinguishes this expression is the distillation cut itself. Puntas, sometimes described as the distiller’s cut, refers to a narrow portion taken from the very end of the heads and beginning of the heart during distillation. Traditionally, this highly flavorful portion of agave distillate was prized by distillers and often reserved to share with friends and family.

For the 2023 release, two high-proof Puntas cuts were blended together and then proofed using deep well water to 53% ABV (106 proof).

Appearance

Crystal clear and brilliant, showcasing its unaged Plata character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Intensely aromatic with fresh green agave, grass, pine, and warm citrus, followed by cooked agave, tropical fruit, herbs, minerals, and spice.

Palate: Concentrated and full-bodied with overripe green-field agave, ancho chile, cracked black pepper, savory salinity, candied yam, salted butterscotch, almonds, green apple, charred pineapple, and tangerine zest.

Finish: Long and complex with lingering agave, pepper, citrus, tropical fruit, minerals, toasted cocoa, and warming spice.

What Makes It Special

Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas 2023 is not simply a higher-proof version of Ocho Plata. Its defining characteristic is the highly selective Puntas distillation cut used to create it.

The 2023 edition combines two separate high-proof cuts, which were then brought to 106 proof with deep well water. This creates an exceptionally concentrated presentation of the flavors and aromas developed from the Blue Weber agave.

It is also a single-estate tequila, with the 2023 release produced from agaves harvested at Rancho Mesa Colorada, located in the Jalisco Highlands. This follows Tequila Ocho’s philosophy of highlighting how individual agave fields and harvests can influence the finished tequila.

The release was produced in very limited quantities, with just over 1,100 cases allocated to the United States, adding to its appeal among Tequila Ocho enthusiasts and collectors.

How to Enjoy

Best enjoyed neat in a tequila tasting glass to experience the concentration of agave and the distinctive character of the Puntas cut.

At 106 proof, allow the tequila several minutes to rest after pouring. A few drops of water can also reveal additional layers of cooked agave, tropical fruit, citrus, herbs, minerals, and spice.

Brand Story

Tequila Ocho was created around the concept of terroir in tequila, highlighting individual agave estates and harvests to demonstrate how growing conditions can influence the finished spirit. Each vintage identifies the specific field from which its agaves were harvested, placing the character of mature Blue Weber agave at the center of the tequila.

Plata Puntas 2023 takes that philosophy further by combining the character of Rancho Mesa Colorada with one of the most prized portions of the distillation. By selecting and blending two high-proof Puntas cuts and bottling the finished tequila at 106 proof, Tequila Ocho created an unusually concentrated expression designed to showcase Blue Weber agave in its boldest form.

We usually drink Anejo and Extra Anejo. We tried Ocho Blanco /Puntas on the recommendation of several social media influencers… and they were right! This stuff is nothing short of spectacular.
